Festschrift stood and looked at his watch. “I don’t want to rush you, but it’s after four and Jake should be back at the office. Shannon should call and tell him she wants to come back to work tomorrow.”

“I think we’re through,” Dr. Stone said. “Anything else you want to tell me, Shannon?”

“Just a question. How am I suppposed to feel about this? I feel guilty already, playacting and pretending. Plus bitterness toward Chuck.”

“That’s understandable. Calm yourself as much as possible and remind yourself of the terror this city is going through. You have a chance to do something about that. This man has lied to you. It’s not unfair for you to avenge that by stopping him from what he’s doing.”

“Sergeant Festschrift, what should I say to Jake?”

“Tell him you’re sorry about your work lately and that you have just been overtired. Promise to do your best work and all that.”

While Shannon was waiting for an answer at the station, Festschrift began gathering information from Larry about the location and floor plan of his apartment. “I’m gonna want to see that tonight and spend the night there. We’ll decide who’ll be stationed where and I think four of us should be able to handle it, inside and out.”

“Hello, Debbie,” Shannon said, and we were all silent, “this is Shannon…. Hi, fine…. No, in fact I think I’ll probably be in tomorrow…. No, just tired, you know. Is Jake around? … Thanks.”

Shannon’s hands shook, but resolve was written in her face. “Hi, Jake, listen, I think I want to come in tomorrow…. No, I’m OK, really. I was just overtired and I feel a lot better since resting over the weekend and today.” She held up her crossed fingers and we smiled. “No, I appreciate it, but I’d just as soon come back to work. I’m going crazy here.” There was truth to that. She made a face as if he was insisting that she stay away a few more days. “Really, Jake, a friend, well, you know Larry Shipman? Yeah. He’s kind of taken me under his wing and I feel better now, so unless you’re going to lock me out, I’ll plan on being there tomorrow at eight…. No, I wouldn’t if I wasn’t sure I was ready. I’ll be back in my old form, and if it doesn’t show right away, you can send me home, I promise. OK, Jake? … Thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She hung up and flopped into a chair. “I thought I wasn’t going to be able to talk him into it!” she said. “I must have really been doing lousy work last week! He’s so sweet. He kept saying that they missed me but that he didn’t want me to come back until I was sure I was ready and not to feel pressure or feel obligated or anything. It was almost like he didn’t want me to come back!” But the look on her face made it clear that he had convinced her of the opposite and that he was just watching out for her.
