Festschrift stood and looked at his watch. âI donât want to rush you, but itâs after four and Jake should be back at the office. Shannon should call and tell him she wants to come back to work tomorrow.â
âI think weâre through,â Dr. Stone said. âAnything else you want to tell me, Shannon?â
âJust a question. How am I suppposed to feel about this? I feel guilty already, playacting and pretending. Plus bitterness toward Chuck.â
âThatâs understandable. Calm yourself as much as possible and remind yourself of the terror this city is going through. You have a chance to do something about that. This man has lied to you. Itâs not unfair for you to avenge that by stopping him from what heâs doing.â
âSergeant Festschrift, what should I say to Jake?â
âTell him youâre sorry about your work lately and that you have just been overtired. Promise to do your best work and all that.â
While Shannon was waiting for an answer at the station, Festschrift began gathering information from Larry about the location and floor plan of his apartment. âIâm gonna want to see that tonight and spend the night there. Weâll decide whoâll be stationed where and I think four of us should be able to handle it, inside and out.â
âHello, Debbie,â Shannon said, and we were all silent, âthis is Shannonâ¦. Hi, fineâ¦. No, in fact I think Iâll probably be in tomorrowâ¦. No, just tired, you know. Is Jake around? ⦠Thanks.â
Shannonâs hands shook, but resolve was written in her face. âHi, Jake, listen, I think I want to come in tomorrowâ¦. No, Iâm OK, really. I was just overtired and I feel a lot better since resting over the weekend and today.â She held up her crossed fingers and we smiled. âNo, I appreciate it, but Iâd just as soon come back to work. Iâm going crazy here.â There was truth to that. She made a face as if he was insisting that she stay away a few more days. âReally, Jake, a friend, well, you know Larry Shipman? Yeah. Heâs kind of taken me under his wing and I feel better now, so unless youâre going to lock me out, Iâll plan on being there tomorrow at eightâ¦. No, I wouldnât if I wasnât sure I was ready. Iâll be back in my old form, and if it doesnât show right away, you can send me home, I promise. OK, Jake? ⦠Thanks. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
She hung up and flopped into a chair. âI thought I wasnât going to be able to talk him into it!â she said. âI must have really been doing lousy work last week! Heâs so sweet. He kept saying that they missed me but that he didnât want me to come back until I was sure I was ready and not to feel pressure or feel obligated or anything. It was almost like he didnât want me to come back!â But the look on her face made it clear that he had convinced her of the opposite and that he was just watching out for her.
